Statement on the Retirement of Chancellor Akinleye 

 

[Durham, January 12, 2024] - The alumni community of North Carolina Central University expresses its deepest gratitude and warmest wishes to Chancellor Akinleye on his retirement. As proud graduates of this esteemed institution, we reflect on the indelible mark Chancellor Akinleye has left on our alma mater during his tenure.

Chancellor Akinleye has been a visionary leader, guiding NCCU with unwavering dedication and commitment. His passion for education and tireless efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping the academic landscape of our beloved university, including his support and guidance through the pandemic. Under his leadership, NCCU has achieved numerous milestones and garnered recognition for its excellence. As alumni, we fondly remember the transformative experiences and opportunities provided by Chancellor Akinleye, specifically hosting homecoming during and after the height of the pandemic. His support for enlarging the footprint of the 'sloping hills and verdant green' and advocacy for the holistic development of students has left a lasting impact on generations of graduates, staff, faculty, and stakeholders in and outside of North Carolina. The legacy he leaves behind is a testament to his vision, leadership, and dedication to the advancement of NCCU.

As Chancellor Akinleye embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we, North Carolina Central University alumni, wish him and his wife, Juanita, joy, fulfillment, and relaxation in this new chapter. In celebration of Chancellor Akinleye's legacy, we, the alumni, remain committed to upholding Dr. James E. Shepard's values and traditions that define NCCU.
