Meet the 2023 Mr & Ms NCCU Alumni Candidates Our 2023 candidates for Mr. & Ms NCCU Alumni are dedicated Alumni that have answered the call to raise money for scholarships for NCCU students. They are energetic and excited to continue the legacy of Truth and Service by giving back to our beloved alma mater. Follow them on their journey on their social media and please support their campaigns! Candidates for Ms. Alumni Ron’Nisha Baldwin My name is Dr. Ron’Nisha Baldwin, candidate for Ms. NCCU Alumni 2023. I’m a nurse practitioner who enjoys giving back to my community. I graduated with my BSN from NCCU in 2012, MSN from South University in 2017, and DNP from Duke University School of Nursing in 2022. During my undergraduate studies at NCCU, I had to work to support myself through school, which limited my time for social activities on campus. Thankfully, I was able to share my love of dance with NCCU’s House Arrest II Dance team before getting accepted into nursing school, which further limited my time for social activities. I believe the social experience as an undergraduate student is just as important as the academic one, which is why I have decided to help raise money towards the NCCU Alumni Scholarship Fundraiser to support the next generation. I believe it is important for students to participate in social activities in order for them to be well-rounded professionals after graduation. A scholarship will lessen the financial impact of college and allow students to have a dynamic and rewarding HBCU experience from an amazing university. My name is Precious Sibley Bernard, and I graduated from NCCU in May 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. I am running for Ms. NCCU Alumni 2023 in order to afford future Eagles the same opportunity that I was given. I am a former local scholarship recipient, so I remember not having to feel the stress that comes along with trying to figure out where the finances are going to come from. Given the rise in tuition costs, and inflation in general, any bit of financial assistance offered is a big deal. I am honored to be able to give back and make a difference for someone else. I am a member of the Cape Fear Area Alumni Chapter in Wilmington, NC. Like many, my decision to attend an HBCU was birthed by watching sitcoms like The Cosby Show and A Different World. The moment I stepped foot on the sloping hills and the verdant green, I knew without a doubt that NCCU was my home. Looking back, this was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. My experience helped shape me into the person I am today. Eagle Pride…Amplified! She is a part of the class of 2021, where she majored in Criminal Justice. Mikeya has dedicated her life to giving back to her community. She currently volunteers with Meals on Wheels & Teen Court. Mikeya finds personal strength through God, and family/friends. A motto that she goes by is “All things are possible through God who strengthens me”. It was through these words that Mikeya was able to overcome adversity and become the first generation college graduate in her family . Upon graduation, Mikeya began working directly in the criminal justice field. The decision to run for this title came from remembering all the support that was received through the time spent at NCCU. With the Ms.NCCU Alumni title, Mikeya plans to use her platform to increase alumni participation and get more recent alumni involved in the organization. I entered NCCU in 1997 and obtained my Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature in 2001. Upon graduating in 2004 I became a double “Eagle” with my Master of Education degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I was a Student Ambassador, Student Resident Assistant, SGA member, and editor of Ex Umbra, the campus creative writing publication. My service to the University and the community continued as I became a dedicated member of the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and represented my sorority as Miss Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. during NCCU homecoming in 1999. I am an Associate Professor of Speech-language pathology in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at NCCU. As a faculty member, I realized how many of our student Eagles face financial barriers that impact their academic performance. As a doctoral student, I learned the impact of higher education leadership on student success. As a former Eagle and mother of a future Eagle, I am responsible for giving back to the wonderful institution that made me into the person and professional I am today. I spent my early childhood and adolescent summers in Durham with my grandmother who introduced me to the significance of servanthood. My grandmother greatly impacted my spiritual growth and ignited my passion for education and altruism. As a result, I was determined to seek a quality education and trust God in all areas of my life. I have always had a strong desire to promote and encourage the welfare of others around me and in the community. As a member of a service-oriented organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. I was propelled to become active in my community. As a community servant and activist, I spent and spend my time helping others in many areas such as reading to the visually impaired, helping the homeless population, and assisting city officials in multiple capacities. Having recently seen how the current royal court of 2022 make such an impact with the North Carolina Central University Scholarship Fundraiser, I was inspired and motivated even more than I was prior to pay it forward and provide an opportunity for students get a higher education. I am from Queens, NY, but I’m representing the Queen City of Charlotte, NC since 2009. I am a Father, Husband, Pop Pop, Uncle, friend, and much more to many. Since matriculating from our great University I have always stayed close and always try to help out in any capacity that I can. Since stepping onto campus during my HBCU tour and receiving blessings from Nancy Rowland and LuAnn Harris, I knew NCCU was special. I credit my Eagle Brother Antoine Calloway, a former Mr. NCCU Alumni candidate with introducing me to the Mr. And Mrs. Alumni contest and how it benefits our students. Since then I have had great interest in participating in this contest, but timing was not my friend. Over the past few years, I have dealt with the results of the pandemic, the loss of my mother, and a cancer diagnosis. I found myself lost, but I am now finding myself, and my purpose again. Aside from my blood family, the one thing that brings me immense joy is spending time with my Eagle Family. To be able to collaborate more with my Eagle family while helping to raise scholarship funds to assist with the funding of our young Eagles' education, is a win-win for me. By doing this, I hope to raise a large amount of scholarship money along with the rest of the candidates, and let our fellow Eagles know the importance of what we are doing and that we can have fun while doing it! Hopefully, we will be able to usher in many more that will want to be a part of this vital fundraising as well. I appreciate your support.
